Metabolic syndrome is a cluster of medical conditions that significantly increases the risk of cardiovascular disease, stroke, type 2 diabetes, dementia, non-alcoholic fatty liver, cancer and other diseases.

It's defined by having three or more of the following:

  • High blood pressure.
  • High blood sugar.
  • High amount of body fat around the waist.
  • High triglycerides.
  • Low HDL cholesterol.

These conditions are often linked to insulin resistance, where the body's cells don't respond properly to insulin, leading to increased blood sugar levels and diabetes.

When you get laboratory blood test the results are reported along with a set of recommended normal values or in range values, but you want to aim for a bit extra... so below are some “optimal” values to look for in your blood test.

Fasting Insulin: 2-5 mg/dl

HDL: 50-90mg/dl

Triglycerides: less than 80 mg/dl

Fasting Glucose: 70-85 mg/dl

HgA1c: 5.0-5.4mg/dl
